IT HAS BEGAN
Wednesday 28th July
First day of shooting Victim the Movie... wow, okay so excitment at all time high, I think me Danny and Alex felt a huge sense of achievement, with the help of ALOT of people we are "making the dream reality" in for the day was 31 people thats quite insane. Actors in today was Ashley Chin and star in the making Letitia Wright (trust me this time next year you will all know) It was a perfect start to the shoot, 1 location, only 2 cast memebers a great way to bed everyone in. They was abit of rushing around for me, (producing isn't easy) especially with the budgets we are working with, it's case of roll up your sleaves and get dirty. A successful day but I had to leave before the end as I'm still doing sucker punch, due to it's sucess it extended it a week so will have to continue doing 18 hour days for another few more days.. I'm not complaining I love what I do, love the people who help me every day, can't wait to get my chance to shout you all out. JM

ROYAL COURT THEATRE
Tuesday 27th July
10.00am Royal Court Theatre, the lovely guys at the theatre have let me have a space for the day, I have to hand it to the theatre they genuinely are about the ARTS in generall, and was quick to offer the help when I told them about Victim and what we are trying to do. I meet Alex , Letitia and Asley at the theatre I wasn't actually meant to be rehearsing to 12.30 but helped them settle and spent the time going into the back story of Mannie (something I do with all my roles) whats the family.. whats there biggest fear, what makes them happy etc.. I'm pleased with how mannie's devloping and with dynamics of the group (Tyson, Jayson and Mannie) being so different we really should bring the film to life. I was in with AC and MM at 1.00 we did some great work although we could have done with a little more time, although I feel like we got some very important work done. Can't believe we start shooting tommorrow, wish us luck. JM

NEARLY THERE...
Monday 26th July
Last minute castings at Spotlight with Anna Kennedy oUR brilliant casting director, I genuinely think we must have seen 250 girls for the role of Davina. It's pure madness that we have not cast our lead actress two days before we start shooting but today it's make or break time. It was the last girl of the day Anna Knightingale, we had seen this wonderful actress before she was brilliant in her first auditioned moved us all and when we got her on camera, not only was shes talented but also stunningly beautiful, I'm just hoping I haven't got any scenes with her, you won't be looking at me.. Then it was back to the office for our final and most essential production meeting with all the crew. We went over the schedule for the next few weeks, if any one had any concerns they were to be voiced now, we have such a superb team and they come with a lot of experience, it look like everyone is happy and we are all confident that we will get through this tough and demanding shoot. Im sure we will come across problems but I will do my very best to make everyone enjoy this shoot as much as possible and we all know we are working towards a Special Script, with a special Team involved. Location, location
Firday 23rd July
Today was what the industry call a "reece day" that means we go around and check all the locations of the movie making sure that the locations are practical, (we can get catering there, we have a green room to do costume and make up, the green room has electricity) etc and most importantly is it excatly right for what we need. We started off at 7.30 (I gota get used to this will be doing every day for 4 weeks) this will be our location for the first three days the house (which will be Tyson and Nyla's flat) Lucy the Art designer has done an amazing job, it looks amazing and Mouc and the boys have done an amazing job painting it up to look stunning, vibrant and hopefully scream out on screen. There was lots of places to visit highlights includes DD my fellow producers house what a cinematic location we have for the finalalie of the movie, I genuinely got excited walking around it. We also have the carribean Sea resturant in Dockland, it's beautiful and again ultra cinematic. Best bit was we got to eat there.. jerk chicken?? yep. JM

CAMERA TESTING
Thursday 22nd
A mad morning of last minute castings and running round making sure everything is in place was followed but some camera test with Alex and our brilliant D.O.P Peter Butler. The guys at Ice (suppliers) were fantastic and to say they are helping us out is an understatement. We have decided to shoot on the 7D with prime lenses (these lenses will make the film look as filmic as possible) and with the 7D it means we can shoot slow mo.. get in. It was a quick dart into to SOHO to meet our post productions boys Berwick street post, again another team that are literally coming up trumps for us and doing us a deal of life time. They will do a test grade on our footage to make sure we know we can get the end result we all want. They are very confidant in getting a fantastic end result. Me and Alex meet with ANOTHER actress as a potential Davina, and then it was off to do Sucker Punch performance number 40. JM

DIRECTOR'S BLOG #002
Well, the writers have done it again - astounding both me and Jason with an amazing new draft of the script. VICTIM just gets better and better. The story of how main character TYSON tries to break out of a cycle of debt and crime is tighter than ever - dramatic from start to finish, but at the same time rooted in the reality of London life. Well done Michael and Ashley, and co-writing team Michael and Adrian.
Meanwhile, casting is going strongly. Subject to contract, we are expecting Ashley Madekwe to star in the film as 'Tia', alongside some fantastic urban music artistes such as Giggs.
Casting is one of the great pleasures for a director - meeting talented actors, and hearing their interpretation of the script. The actors we have met so far have been brilliant, and I would like to thank them all for making the effort of seeing us either at the Oval, or trekking out to Upton Park. We are trying to cast a tight knit group of friends, whose delicate relationships are disturbed when an out-of-town cousin comes to stay ('Tia', to be played by Ashley Madekwe). With each actor comes a different vision, and the creative part of casting is trying to imagine how different combinations of actors will work. If we get the casting right, then this film will be a blinder.
A big thanks to the agencies which have helped us out so far: BWH; Gordon&French; Identity; and Roger Carey. Also to casting director Angela Grosvenor.
Keep watching this space to get the latest casting updates.

UNIT BASE/ RECALLS
Friday 2nd July 2010
We moved into what will be our unit base for the next 6 weeks. It’s a lovely office not to far from Upton Park and the best thing is we got it for free. A very big big shout out has to go to MM brother Mouc, he has been an absolutely diamond not only has he sorted us with a free base for 6 weeks but he has been so accommodating, providing anything we need from internet dongles to kitting out the office. Top man and a genuine nice guy we are fortunate to have people like him on board. We also saw some of favourite Davina’s from last week, (girls don’t panic if you’ve not been called in yet) we are still seeing more next week and could only see so many on what was a crazy day. Can’t give too much away on this front, but hopefully by end of next week some announcements will be made. It was good to see Ashley Chin read with the girls, what an actor this guy is, if you don’t know him check him out, he has just been nominated for a big award in Edinburgh Festival for his latest film Cherry Tree Lane this hits cinemas in August so watch out. I have to mention Adrian Scott and Michael Kyie for yet again making a deadline. A new sharper version has been delivered. 3 weeks on Monday before we start shooting.. It’s emotional.

LOCATIONS
Thursday 1st July 2010
Pinch Punch first day of the month. Wow this year is flying by and still so much I need to achieve. We welcomed back Ashley Chin from his hols, not been the same without him. So today was all about locations, we found ourselves in the heart of Essex my and DD neck of the woods. We have secured two beautiful houses which make for our final part of the movie… it’s really excited to start putting all these pieces together you can really see the film coming to life. We also secured two other locations for the shoot and we haven’t had the locations manager start yet so it’s looking very positive. Oh and something random to come out of the day.. Frozen red grapes they are amazing, it was my first time but I recommend them highly.. get a tooth pick put four grapes on it put in the freezer, you got yourself a very healthy ice lolly. JM

No Pressure Then!
Wednesday 30th June 2010
I was detained in the morning with a meeting with the brilliant Sean Holmes artistic director of the Lyric Hammersmith (more on that another time). Alex our director was busy meeting D.O.P’s, again another difficult decision so many factors to think about who can make our film look the most beautiful, who can be creative, who is going to be able to do all that but also tell our story. Help!!! I suppose it’s the realisation that if any part your cast or crew is the wrong person for the job it can have a devastating effect on our final film, any mistakes we make now will be detrimental in the long run. No pressure then. We also assigned a locations manager, this is fantastic news he had come to us via three recommendations so you can’t do better than that, I’m very excited to welcome Graham to Team Victim. JM

CREWING UP!!
Tuesday 29th June 2010
Back at Shimmer and a day of meetings, the talented MM was with us for the day! We had meetings with more actresses, followed by the genius and complete gent that is John Adams, I have had the priviledge of working with John on two films I did last year one called FIT, the other Kick-Off! He is brilliant at what he does, (Line Producer or First AD) for those that wish to know, a Line Producers role is to handle the day to day running of the shoot and I mean everything!! They are the first port of call for any crew members and any problems (hopefully there won’t be too many), 1ST AD the role of the first is to make sure everything that needs to be filmed gets shot, he has to rally the crew, keep on top of the actors and make sure we all remained focused. John is more than qualified for both roles, we’ve asked John to be our line producer and he has said yes.

How to Solve a Problem Like Davina
Monday 28th June 2010
We moved from the Oval theatre to Shimmer Productions office in Shoreditch I have to give a big shout out to Lisa and the Team they are just lovely… It was just me and Alex for the day discussing the plan of action for the week ahead and what had to be in place by end of the week. To give you an idea, 1) Unit base for following Monday in East London and preferably for free. 2) A Line Producer and 3) Locations manager, there was 100 other things, but I’ll bore you some other time. We moved onto “how do you solve a problem like Davina” nearly gave Lloyd Webber a call. Discussions about possible, D.O.P’s (Director of photography) for people who aren’t film buffs aka cameraman. Wrapped up at 5, I had to head to Royal Court early to record a radio interview about the show, then it was Performance number 16th of Sucker Punch, if you haven’t seen it come. JM

DIRECTOR'S BLOG #001

As a director I think visually - and here's what the film VICTIM means to us right now. This image seems to sum up the story - and now we want to know what it means to you. Be part of the VICTIM film project - tells us your thoughts on this promotional image.
There is SO much going on right now with VICTIM, it is difficult to decide where to start. So bear with me - I'll let you know the names of the fantastic actors coming on board once the ink is dry. Some will be new, but some will be faces known to you all. Wait for the latest right here. And I'll try and give you an idea of what it's like to helm one of the most exciting new film projects of the year.

END OF PRE PRODUCTION WEEK 1
Friday June 25th 2010
Back to castings, so we are really struggling to find a Davina that the whole team are happy with, we always knew this would be the hardest part to cast, she’s such a multi layered character and goes on such an emotional journey theres so many factors to consider. That’s not to say we haven’t been getting in brilliant actresses because we have..and I'm sure with seen our Davina..so watch this space. Highlight of the day was my good friend Karl Davies (Kingdom, The Unsinkable Titanic) coming in and blowing us away with his reading of Malcolm, Karl humanised a very unhinged character, made him truthful and real. Its been a very good week with the team working together nicely.

Wednesday June 23rd 2010
So day 2 of Castings and another rammed packed day of mostly talented people, still a lot of do’s and don’t’s in audition that you see. Two moments of real excitement for us, firstly the beautiful Ashley Madekwe (secret diary of a Call Girl series, 2 & 3 West 10 and This beautiful Life) came in and did what I knew she would, completely wow us. Ashley was genuinely fantastic but if I’m an honest was always my first choice for the role. We have put an offer to her agent, I’m confident she will say yes. The best moment of the day goes to Leticia Wright, OMG, if you don’t know the name you soon will, she is a brilliantly talented 16 year old, uber talented, special and just made the whole team buzz with excitement. The confidence/arrogance (every star has abit) that she bought into the room and the “realness and authenticity” she bought was insane. Letitia started of my bragging about her American accent and then began to talk to us for a minute in her best Alabama voice which was just spot on. Then when doing the scenes was just Special, I’ll say no more but you’ve been warned. A very successful day with possible two out of our three leading ladies sorted.

VICTIM MOVIE Diary day 2:
VICTIM MOVIE Day 2:
CASTINGS:
So it was straight into action for the Team, we had the wonderful venue of The Oval
Theatre (desperately requiring an artist director, please see Che Walker) for the place
to hold the castings. So we are solely concentrating on the female characters of the
Movie (it’s hard job), with the three main leads having already been cast, myself set to
play Mannie, Ashley Chin to play Tyson our lead and Michael Marris to play Jayson.
So Davina’s, Tia’s & Nyla’s today, Alex was completely brilliant at handling the
actress and giving everyone a fair shoot, if I was leading the castings I’m afraid I
wouldn’t have been as forgiving. All I can say for the actors out there you only get
one shot, PREPARE !! I was surprised to see people who hadn’t even the read full
script, how can I be passionate about you when your not passionate about my sfilm.
Also why would you want to be apart of a film that you have no idea what its about,
you might have to do anything. However we saw some amazing talent, and was very
exciting when a 14 year came in the last of the day and wowed us for Nyla.. lets
rumble.

VICTIM MOVIE Diary day 1
VICTIM MOVIE Day 1 Monday June
Making dreams become reality:
After meeting various directors I Announce to the Team Victim (Ashley Chin,
Michael Marris, Danny Donnelly, Michael Kyie and Adrian Scott) that we have
selected Alex Pillai (Being Human) as director of Victim, We saw a lot of directors
all brilliant in their own way, but Alex shone through with his passion and experience.
He completely understood the requirements for the look of the film we wanted to
achieve despite the tiny budget and the icing on the cake was both me and Ashley
had seen the man at work, we had both worked with him over the past few months
working on the “new look” BILL. He is phenomenal and I can’t wait to watch him
steer Victim to NO1 box office smash, but he is going need a little help along the
way. Everyone was happy with decision including Pure Film co founder and my
fellow producer Danny Donnelly.
